What is the Student Union Referendum?
This referendum gives students the chance to approve a new fee that will fund the design, construction, and operation of a permanent Student Union — a central hub made by and for students.
What will the Student Union include?
Imagine it: new retail, offices for clubs, event spaces, gaming, bowling, and more. This space is for you – get involved and make it yours!
How much is the fee and when does it start?
The fee starts at $75 per semester and increases throughout it's four phases, with 25% of all fee revenues collected being redistributed through Financial Aid. For full details, check out the breakdown below.
Will financial aid help cover the cost?
Yes! Like other campus-based fees, this one is eligible for financial aid, meaning many students won’t pay out-of-pocket.
How was this project developed?
Student leaders have been working closely with campus departments and students since 2023 to bring this vision to life — gathering feedback, researching needs, and designing a space with the student experience in mind.
When would the Student Union open?
The new Student Union Building is projected to open in Fall 2031, serving as a vibrant hub for student life, events, organizations, and more.
How much is the Student Union Fee, and how does it change over time?
The fee will be assessed in four phases, starting Fall 2025:
- Phase 1 (Fall 2025): $75/semester (RTA: $18.75)
- Phase 2 (Fall 2028): $100/semester (RTA: $25.00)
- Phase 3 (Fall 2031): $450/semester (RTA: $112.50)
- Phase 4 (Fall 2061): $225/semester (RTA: $56.25)
RTA = Return to Aid (25% of the total fee goes back to students via financial aid).
Who pays the fee?
All enrolled undergraduate, graduate academic, and graduate professional students during Fall and Spring semesters. The fee is not charged during Summer Session.
Who makes decisions about the building?
A Student Union Building Committee of students and staff will guide the process, gather feedback, and ensure transparency. If you’re interested in helping shape the project, reach out to Student Affairs staff to get involved.
