The University of California, Merced has committed to becoming fully sustainable by 2020. Upholding our “Triple Net Zero” commitment will be impossible if the necessary technological and ideological changes are not implemented across campus.
Last academic year, club and organization leaders, staff and faculty rallied together to organize outreach events and retrofit projects as the “Sustain Gang.” This group organized the “Green Up Campaign.” As a result, a strong network of students involved with sustainability was established. Students graduate but student activism in sustainability must be maintained. Making this network of students an official body of ASUCM would perpetuate activism for sustainability. Funding this network would enable activism for sustainability to continue and spread throughout all activities on campus.
