The Central Valley has been an underserved region of California where the rate of higher education, employment, and healthcare has lagged behind other regions of the state. UC Merced opened in 2005 to address the higher-education needs of San Joaquin Valley by increasing the access to a four year university and the standard of education for students in the Valley.
